Welcome Home, a painting done for my parents. It is the house I grew up in.

If you follow me on Facebook, you may have seen a couple of posts about this painting. I did this as a gift to my parents. My mom was diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this year and they have moved into an apartment…they were previously “snowbirds” traveling back & forth from Canada to Arizona. Anyway, I thought that it would be nice to paint this for them so they can put it up in their new place. The house and yard was a very special place for my family and we have many great memories growing up there.

The two people in the painting are my mom on the porch and my dad working in the flowerbed. I wanted the end result to be somewhat symbolic of what our family has been going through this last year with my mom and so I wanted the sky to be a little dramatic but I also wanted to it to be peaceful and serene. It is a crazy thing this cancer. Sometimes I feel so devastated that I wonder if I will ever be able to paint again nevermind get out of bed. The next time, I feel desperately like I MUST paint & I’m not even the one that has the cancer! Here is a quote from my dad that he just wrote today about all this cancer craziness

  • “…and He has done this to pour His grace more abundantly on us to have Him more alive in our souls. Yes, these are days of desperation, and deeper ones may well be on the horizon; but they are also days of our souls vibrant with God’s life within, in wonder and grace. “Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed…. Preparing for us a weight of glory beyond all comparison…And even today, cancer, does not rank on the same scale as the riches of His grace poured out on us in this present room; for He keeps track of every single cancer cell before and after the upcoming MRI.”

The biggest challenge with this painting was probably getting it from a place of blocked-in shapes, looking very basic and unoriginal to a painting that had depth and personality. It is one thing to be able to know how to paint in shapes, various elements and colors, it is another thing entirely to be able to paint intuitively where you are putting yourself in the painting, and viewers can observe that. It is what takes a painting from “that’s nice, you know how to paint trees and birds and shapes” to “this looks like it was meaningful to the artist, there is definitely emotion and passion in this painting”. I believe it is easy enough to learn techniques such as shapes, perspective, shading but if you can’t paint intuitively and with feeling than it’s not exciting and the result is very boring to the viewer.

For me, this process involves really thinking through the piece and figuring out all the details such as angles, how to get the important elements into the frame of the canvas,  mixing colors, mediums etc. to turning off my brain and just painting intuitively. What I mean by that is to trust that I have figured out the details and now I just paint by instinct and what feels right. Yes, that means I may have to make corrections but the outcome is so much preferable to a painting that features a subject that COULD be beautiful and SHOULD be beautiful but yet still has no life on the canvas. There is always that stage for me in all of my works & it is the most frustrating, stressful stage. At that point, I just keep going and all of a sudden it starts getting away from me and the “magic starts to happen”

So with this video, keep in mind, it is just the beginning stages of the painting. I would say it was just before the stage where I turn my brain off and start painting by instinct. You will notice some re-workings of elements, a complete angle change of the house (which it still bothers me that I didn’t start out at a 3/4 angle…I know better) & many layers of paint to achieve a transparency and a glow in the painting. I also used glazing mediums on almost every brush stroke and an airbrush towards the end. This is an acrylic painting with oil added at the end to bring out colors & a little more texture. Materials listed below. To see more detail photos check out the gallery below and click on each thumbnail to see a larger image.

  • Acrylic Paints- Chroma Atelier Interactive
  • Liquitex Glazing Medium
  • Golden Airbrush Medium
  • Holbein Water Miscible Oil Paints

  • Various bristle and synthetic brushes

Oh, one more thing…all of the music in this video was created by moi! I won’t say I wrote it because it was Garageband and Mixcraft, but I will say that I mixed it,  I designed and I created it. Hey! I can’t have art as my hobby because it’s my job, and reading isn’t a hobby because it’s basically the same as living & breathing sooooo I guess I will start creating my own music as a hobby. Regardless, I’m the type of person that if I’m not creating in some way, I would legit lose my mind. I imagine it can be hard to live with me at times….Whether it’s any good or not? Well- I’ll let you guys be the judge of that 🙂 This will be the first time anyone has heard any of it other than my daughters. (YIKES) The music titles:

  • Elixir (intro clip)
  • Solar
  • Cerulean
  • Apricity
  • REM

This Acrylic Painting by Canadian artist Janelle Nichol is inspired by a Spanish Flamenco dancer who is in a moment of rest between dances.

Hope you are all having a fantastic Summer so far! Just wanted to share another piece with you. This one is titled “Interlude”. I wanted to do a Spanish dance pe dress with a vibrant beautiful woman.

One of my favorite things about these pieces are the dreamy, abstract, slightly impressionist backgrounds. I love working on the backgrounds and discovering what colors come out. Then I just need to decide what colors to focus on and what to fade out.

I have sold the original of this but it is available as a Limited Edition Print and Giclee Canvas. Both come with a Certificate of Authenticity and they are available to purchase in my Store. Until July 13th, you can purchase this piece at a Promotional Price.

Thank you everybody for the great response to my collection of watercolors! I now have another new series to introduce to you. This is my Fine Art Acrylic series.

It’s a collection of “moments”. We all have these moments. Moments when we are relaxed, moments when we are exhilerated, contemplative, melancholy, reflective. The list goes on. I did this series in order to bring out the loveliness and sweetness of all of those moments that seem to be so normal and regular at the time.

Here are some progress pictures of the first piece of the series I did. This is “A Meditation.” For the next six weeks I will be featuring a piece from this new series with a blog post. There are  6 pieces in this series with more to come. They are all available to view in my gallery and purchase in my store. The originals range in price from $3200-$3500. I am thrilled to say I have already sold one Original titled “Interlude”

They are also available as Limited Edition Prints and Giclee Canvases. Since I’m featuring “A Meditation” this week- it is available for a special introductory price this week only with $40 off the Limited Edition  print and $50 off the Limited Edition Giclee Canvas. You will receive a Certificate of Authenticity with all my Limited Edition prints.

Janelle-Nichol-Art-Sketches Janelle-Nichol-Saturday-Night

So this is my Saturday evening. There is a blizzard outside so this setting is particularly cozy tonight. I have my Starbucks, candles, wine and my art so I’m aaaaallllll good. I could tell you all about those little canvases that I’m working on there but I decided to do a couple of videos instead. In the videos I discuss my 5×7 Originals that I do. I have about 100 of them in all for sale. I also show you lots of other cool things that I have available for purchase and I will also have them at the show that I am doing on November 28, 29, 30. Also, at the end of the first video I open the back door and show you some of the blizzard, which as it turns out, was at a more calm point…it got a lot worse later in the day. The snow doesn’t really show up very well on the video that I took either but you can hear the blowing wind. Oh one other thing! In the second one I have my glasses off & on…the reason for that is because I was filming while taking care of my daughter and I kept forgetting I had glasses on & off & I didn’t really feel like going back & shooting it all again.

Hi all! I have a few new pieces to show you in the next week or so, along with some videos as well. This one is called “A Charmed Life”. I have some detail shots as well as a video of me using my watercolor paints to create the lovely vintage style dress she is wearing. Please make sure to go to the bottom of this post to see all of that! Now,  “A Charmed Life“… Somehow that phrase came into my head while looking at this piece, so I decided to with it. First I decided to check & make sure that the meaning of the phrase actually made sense for this piece. Here is the meaning I found online

A Charmed Life: to always be lucky and safe from danger.

inspirational, Janelle Nichol. retro style, vintage style, art for licensing, greeting card images for licensing, artist, floral, foliage, pink, abstract, unique, pretty, beautiful, whimsical, charming, lady

A Charmed Life- this is the first piece in the Garden Party Series. This charming lady is on her way to tea during this lovely afternoon. This watercolor mixed media painting by inspirational Canadian artist Janelle Nichol is available for licensing.

I think that totally suits this pretty lady. Doesn’t she look like everything is always perfect for her? Her world, her clothes, her hair? Yes, she certainly does lead a Charmed Life. As for the actual reality I had creating this piece….not such a charmed experience. I actually redid this lady 3 times. I had her all painted and everything on the canvas and had to start over twice. I really wanted her to be blonde, but it was just SO MUCH yellow. But a brunette didn’t look right as I wanted to keep the mood of this piece really light & when I painted brown hair on her, it was like “WOW-YIKES!!!” That is to say it really stood out & not in a good way. So I found a way to give her blonde hair with brown paint. So even though I used brown tones, you still get the feeling she is a blonde, maybe a little bit of a red-head. Her dress on the other hand, wad very easy & very fun to paint with my watercolors. Thank goodness for that!!

One other thing…this is just the first piece in my Garden Party Series. I have many more totally completed pieces for this series…unfortunately, they are all still in my head & I don’t have the time to get them all on canvas right now. But I CAN tell you they all look like sweet luscious candy!  I’m hoping to get one more done before Christmas, but the other ones are going to have to wait until next year. I’m also incorporating “Accessory pieces” into this series. Those will include more of a cleaner look that will just be purses and shoes & dresses without a person on them.

This is available to purchase in my Etsy Shop as a small/medium Print, Limited Edition large Print or Giclee Canvas

Thanksgiving mixed media artwork by inspirational artist Janelle Nichol. Scripture 1 Thessalonians.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my fellow Canadians out there! I’ve had Fall on the brain for sometime now so I am doing a few pieces with the Autumn/Fall theme. I’m actually working on 3 pieces simultaneously. I hardly ever do that…it’s usually just one at a time, but right now I have too many ideas in my head at once so I thought I’d try working on them all at the same time. I’m hoping the pieces will end up looking similar but hopefully different enough.

So here in Alberta, Canada…especially up here in Grande Prairie, which is in Northern Alberta, we don’t really get a lot of different colors in the Fall. It’s mostly just brown & bright yellow. That’s if you’re lucky. Usually, it’s so windy that the leaves don’t even stay on the trees very long so it’s just….sticks. Nice right? BUT sometimes we can get lots of bright yellow leaves against a darkening/foreboding deep blue sky with the sun shining & the contrast is really beautiful. That’s if the snow doesn’t come.  I’ve always wondered why people would say Fall was their favorite time of year. To me, it just means Summer is over & Winter is coming & could LITERALLY be here any second. We don’t really get transitional seasons here, whereas in more Southern areas you still can have lovely warm fall days with just a little bit of crispness in the air. Up here, all we get is COLD. It’s not crisp. It’s cold. Of course, there are some people who would beg to differ with me.

Autumn is a second Spring where every leaf is a flower. Fall themed Mixed Media artwork by

So that’s my feelings about the season of Autumn. I am trying to incorporate those into my current pieces. Hopefully I can get some of that windy, foreboding blue prairie sky against the bright yellow leaves, but also include some of the oranges and reds that traditionally come with Fall as well.

This is just a short short video of the state of one of my pieces right now. I still have more sketching to do with the people I will put on there but the background is pretty much done I think. Let me know what you think in the comments below. & please don’t forget about the fabulous Pin it To Win It Contest! There is still time to enter & one person will win over $180 worth of Janelle Nichol artwork including various sizes of Prints, and a hand embellished, hand signed, canvas reproduction! Enter here

My latest! I titled it “A Winter’s Fairytale”….in case you didn’t catch on from the title of the blog post. It started out being a Christmas piece for a Santa Claus. Nope. That didn’t happen. I was doing all these things to the background, getting it all ready for Santa & what happens? It turns into this dreamy ethereal like background!!! How these things happen I’ll never know.

A beautiful fairy with delicate wings is resting in a magical dreamlike winter setting. The image of this inspirational art by Canadian mixed media artist Janelle Nichol is available for licensing in a variety of categories.

So because I liked all the white and gray in the background & I REALLY had winter on the brain, I was determined to make this, at the very least, a winter piece, if not a Christmas piece. Let’s be clear, I could have covered all of this up & started over, but the colors and the whole mood of this piece was begging for me to keep going with this. I must have been listening to some kind of dreamy, mood music or something. So I think that it kind of looks like a winter setting but more of a dreamy magical winter setting with the pink and the red flowers etc. She is a fairy & so she has lots of flowers on her dress and I tried to get away with keeping her dress just pink and white but it did not look good people. It needed some kind of color. So yes- she has flowers and green leaves on her dress. In winter. It’s not supposed to make sense! This is a magical winter where flowers still grow and people aren’t cold. Just…..go with me.

It has been a long time since I last posted. Sorry about that. I have SUPER busy trying to get more pieces done. I’ve also been working quite a bit on more Limited Edition 5×7 Canvas Originals, which are SO CUTE! Those also come with a Certificate of Authenticity and make fantastic gifts for people! I will be doing another post on those in the next few weeks too.

But for now, here are all of my iPhone 4 and 5 Cases. Finally! It took me so long to get these all up and ready to sell. Right now they are 20% off until Saturday, October 5th. It might seem early for Christmas…and you’re right. It is. I am NOT ready for winter to come! However, my mind is starting to imagine all of these Christmas, Autumn and holiday scenes I could create so I have to get them done before I forget what I wanted to do!… and making notes doesn’t always help as much as you would think. So when this particular scene flashed in my head, I KNEW it was the next piece I needed to do.

Christmas images, inspirational holiday, holiday images for licensing, mother and daughter, Christmas tree, Janelle Nichol, beautiful, elegant, abstract, Christmas tree, Seasonal images, Christmas artwork, Mixed media, Folk art, mistletoe, holly and ivy, abstract folk art

An elegant mother and her charming little girl are spending time together under glowing Christmas lights in their beautifully decorated house during the holiday season. The Christmas tree beside them, with its branches made with flourishes adds a touch of whimsy. This inspirational image by Canadian mixed media artist Janelle Nichol is available for licensing.

I’ve said before that I’m always excited to start a new piece but I’m also very nervous as I’m never quite sure if I’m up to the task of recreating on canvas what I am seeing in my head. Often, I end up with wonderfully different results than what was in my head but sometimes the process is pretty painful trying to figure out how to get it all out so what people can actually see & feel is the same as or similar to what was in my head. Often, in my desire to get these visions in my head down on canvas so that I MYSELF can actually see them I can freak out a little bit!

With this canvas, I wanted to convey a really peaceful, calm feeling. Actually the word “peace” is across both of their faces and the gold dots in the top left corner represent Christmas lights. The mother and daughter could be decorating or they could be just spending time together enjoying the beautiful decorations and I don’t know about you, but I am ALWAYS casually walking around the house in a beautiful evening gown. Nope. No I’m not. So I suppose they are maybe admiring the beautiful ornaments- and that I actually do.  I LOVE my Christmas ornaments and I love to sit around with all of my Christmas lights on (did you know that if you have enough Christmas lights in your house you never have to turn on your actual house lights??!!) listening to music and staring at my tree and how amazing it is & think about how amazing I am that I decorated it so beautifully. (“that is really self indulgent Janelle, get over yourself!”) There, I said it, so you all don’t have to.

I have also added/hidden a little bit of music here & there within the piece to represent the music that is playing in the background. Some of you may know, I like to hide elements within my piece for the viewer to discover long after purchasing the artwork. I often here from my collectors, how thrilled they are to have just discovered something new within their piece that they did not notice previously. I love that!

This piece is available in my Etsy Shop and you can always message me if you’d like to discuss various sizes and editions of any of my prints. I have open editions, limited editions, giclee canvases and many different sizes available in all of those that aren’t necessarily listed in my store so please don’t hesitate to shoot me off an email with any questions you may have. I would love to hear any of your comments so please don’t hesitate to let me know your thoughts on this piece or if you stare at your Christmas decorations like I do!

I have many detail shots of this piece and if you click on each thumbnail, you will see the image much clearer and larger.
